Frans Eemil Sillanpää (1888–1964)
was one of the most famous Finnish writers and so far the only Finnish
writer who has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. One of
his famous novels August (1941) is connected to Poet’s Way.
The novel is also adapted to film by well known Finnish director
Matti Kassila (1956). |

The name Poet’s Way is inspired by a journey
made by Finnish national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg and Finnish
writer Zacharias Topelius a hundred years ago. Runeberg’s
(1804-1877) known collection of poem’s Elk Hunters (1832)
was inspired on his hunting trips in Kuru and Virrat. |

Finland’s national author Zacharias Topelius
(1818-1898) followed in his mentor’s Runeberg’s food
steps both figuratively and concretely. Topelius was one of the
earliest Finnish authors and the first publisher of Finnish historical
roman in 1850. His best-known series of novels is The Field Surgeon's
Stories (1859–67) about Finnish history. |

Steamship Cooperative Tarjanne bought its former
competitor steamship Pohjola in 1932 when freight incomes dropped
because of increase of car/highway traffic and tourists were needed
for a new source of income. Pohjola sailed on a same route along
Tarjanne until year 1975. |

Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) was one
of Finland’s most well known painters. S/s Tarjanne’s
upper deck’s restaurant was renewed in 1916 according to Gallen-Kallela’s
design. Impi Marjatta (1891-1895) was Akseli and Mary Gallen-Kallela’s
beloved firstborn who unfortunately didn’t get to live at
his father’s single-handedly designed Kalela wilderness studio
and home in Ruovesi which was completed in late autumn 1895. |
